Big Pokey’s rap career got its start in the early ’90s when he started releasing tracks on Houston producer DJ Screw’s mixtapes. The mixtape “June 27th Freestyle” by DJ Screw is widely regarded as a classic of the chopped-and-screwed hip-hop genre, and it features Big Pokey.

Hardest Pit in the Litter, his first studio album, was released towards the beginning of the millennium.Pokey released D-Game 2000 the following year, another album of mid-tempo, 808-driven rhythms that included appearances from numerous of his Houston contemporaries.
