The first-year student Devonte Grant passed away over the weekend in a dorm at Coastal Carolina University has been identified.

After the coroner’s office determined that the student passed away on Sunday at Magnolia Hall due to natural causes, the family gave the university permission to reveal the student’s name.

Devonte Grant, a Little River resident majoring in theater, has just been given a part in the spring performance of The Green Bird. He was also quite involved on campus, having joined the Coastal Activities Board and the African American Initiative for Men, among others.

Grant told WMBF News that he was eager to participate in CCU clubs and programs when they spoke with him back in August on the first day of classes.

Grant was taken from this world too soon, according to a post by the North Myrtle Beach High School Performing Arts Department.

“His influence on our department of performing arts was unparalleled throughout my time here. The children he interacted with continue to carry on his legacy of support, generosity, and encouragement, according to a statement from the performing arts department at NMBHS.

Grant’s unexpected demise will be remembered by the university on April 13, 2023, at the CCU Memorial Program, according to CCU.

The institution stated, “This is a difficult time for all of us, and people on campus may want to explore support for one another.

Students are encouraged to get in touch with Counseling Services or dial 843-349-2305 if they want to talk to a counselor.

To look into the deceased, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was contacted. According to CCU, if a death is reported on a college or university campus, SLED must be notified as required by state law.

The joint investigation is being led by SLED and campus public safety at CCU.
