Frank Russo, who was a pivotal figure in the infamous Cuyahoga County corruption case while acting as auditor, died on Saturday at the age of 72.

Russo began his political career in 1974, when he was 23 years old, as a member of the Mayfield Heights Council. Ten years later, he was appointed county recorder. In 1997, he was elected to the job of county auditor.

In December 2010, then-U.S. District Judge Kate O’Malley sentenced Russo to 22 years in federal prison for his role in the Cuyahoga County corruption scandal. After a jury convicted him guilty of federal corruption charges, Commissioner Jimmy Dimora, a personal friend, was sentenced to 28 years in jail.

Although his cause of death was not revealed, those close to him said Russo had a number of medical problems, including diabetes and heart problems.

Due to his failing health and senior age, Russo died outside the walls of a federal prison.
