Several health issues had been plaguing John Thompson, a family source claimed. Unknown is the cause of death. When he died, he was surrounded by friends and family.
Thompson spent 27 years as a head coach at Georgetown University, where in 1984 he guided the Hoyas to their lone championship. Later, he talked on being recognized as the first head coach of African American descent to take home the National Championship.
The statement that he was the first Black person to be intelligent enough to win the national championship bothered him, he told ESPN. “I was extremely happy of winning the national championship and I was very proud of the fact that I was a Black American.”
“You have discriminated against thousands of my ancestors to deny them this opportunity,” I may have said, “and I may have been the first black person to be given the opportunity to compete for this prize.”
