The 72-year-old Matthew Peck passed away on April 22 at Noble Hospital in Westfield, Massachusetts.
Matthew was raised in West Springfield’s parochial and public schools. He also attended Williston Academy, St. Louis University, Holyoke Community College, and the University of Bridgeport. Matthew was born on August 31, 1950, in Springfield, to the late Edward C. Peck, Jr., and Ruth (Mahoney) Peck.
While residing in Puerto Rico from 1975 to 1978, Matthew, a lifetime soccer player and all-around athlete, coached, played, and was selected to be a member of the Puerto Rican National soccer team. While living in Puerto Rico, Matt worked as a history teacher at the Robinson School. He wed Pamela J. Epler there in the chapel in 1975.

He and his older brother Robert started one of Western Massachusetts’ earliest soccer journals after moving back home, the New England Soccer News. He was the American International College’s soccer coach as well. At Springfield’s Commerce High School, he coached soccer and taught history in the bilingual program. Pamela and Matthew collaborated with the Center for Human Development in Western Massachusetts and played a significant role in providing care for a number of children who were in the custody of child services. Matthew left teaching to pursue a career in sales, and together with his business partner John Fleet they founded Fleet Business Products.
At the Toomey-O’Brienn Funeral Home, 1043 Westfield Street, West Springfield, calling hours are on Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. At 9:30 on Saturday, there will be a Funeral Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, and then there will be a burial in Springfield’s Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
Donations to the West Springfield Youth Sports Assn., PO Box 868, West Springfield, MA 01090, in Matthew’s honor may be made in lieu of flowers.
