He had just won the elite men’s title at the Scottish MTB XC Championships, which took place over the weekend in Dumfries and Galloway.
Monday night, Mr. Wardell had been on the BBC Scotland show The Nine.

Wardell, who lived in Glasgow, had been racing mountain bikes since he was a teenager, but he didn’t start doing it for money until earlier this year.
British Cycling said that Wardell’s win at Kirroughtree Forest on Sunday was a “show of incredible resilience” because he was able to catch the early race leaders and take the win.

The 95-mile West Highland Way runs from Glasgow to Fort William. Mountain bikers and bikepackers have been vying for record times along the Way for 10 years. Completely riding “the way” is a major feat. It climbs 10,351 feet in that short distance, and parts of the trail require hiking.

Rab Wardell, a retired pro mountain biker, has long envisioned this route.
Rab completed the route in 12 hours and 15 minutes in 2011 and just under 12 hours in 2012. Steve McInnes later broke his record with an 11:30 finish. Keith Forsyth set a new fastest time of 10:27 in 2015.
Rab thought about breaking his record in 2019 and set a sub-10-hour goal. Rab began his fall training midwinter. Gary McDonald of Fort William set a 9:28 time on the route in early August, to Rab’s dismay.
