Ron Lyle (February 12, 1941 – November 26, 2011) was a professional boxer from the United States. Lyle was a heavyweight boxer who competed against many of the greatest heavyweights of his day, including several of the world’s best. Known for his powerful punches and for enthralling audiences with his bravery and drive in the ring, Lyle was a well-known fighter. In May 1975, Lyle fought for the WBC and WBA heavyweight championships against champion Muhammad Ali, but was defeated when Ali stopped him in the eleventh round of the fight. Despite his defeat to Ali,
he is remembered for his victories against Buster Mathis, Oscar Bonavena, Jimmy Ellis, Earnie Shavers, and Joe Bugner, among other opponents. When Lyle fought George Foreman in January 1976, it was his most memorable fight. Lyle managed to score many knockdowns and severely injured the former champion, but he was ultimately knocked out himself in the fifth round. As far as Foreman is concerned, Ron Lyle is the only fighter who has ever truly injured him during his peak, and he has always given him credit for delivering him his hardest fight of his career.
