Many of my favorite musical experiences have been times when I’ve seen someone for the first time and been immediately captivated and intrigued. Back before the pandemic, I went to see Mary Flower, Alan Hager, and Thad Beckman play at Strum in Portland. I was excited going in–Mary and Alan are as good as it gets. Thad was a new entity for me, and my immediate impression of him was that this was a guy who plays music the way I like to hear music played. I chatted with him after the show and we exchanged phone numbers. I invited him over to the house one day and we spent a couple of hours playing music together. We had some things in common–we were both blues freaks from the Northwest who had spent time in Austin–and that afternoon gave me a glimpse into what a special kind of human being Thad was. We agreed to try to scare up some duo gigs, and then Covid and Thad’s health issues intervened. Thad surfaced for a fabulous gig at the end of last August at Artichoke with Denny Bixby and John Bunzow. He was on oxygen for part of that show, but he played and sang beautifully, and, best of all, he seemed so happy to be back on stage. The Portland music scene woke up this morning to the news that Thad passed away. Such a huge loss.
