Born in Miami, Florida, in either 1984 or 1985, Henry “Enrique” Tarrio has an Afro-Cuban heritage. Throughout his life, Tarrio engaged in various criminal activities, including theft, the rebranding and resale of stolen diabetic test strips, and the burning of a Black Lives Matter banner. Notably, between 2012 and 2014, he served as an informant for federal and local law enforcement.
Leadership Roles and Political Affiliations
Tarrio assumed the position of chairman of the Proud Boys, a far-right neo-fascist organization, in 2018. Additionally, he held the role of Florida state director for Latinos for Trump, a grassroots organization supporting former president Donald Trump. In 2020, Tarrio briefly ran for Florida’s 27th congressional district before withdrawing from the race.
Involvement in the Capitol Riot and Legal Consequences
On January 4, 2021, just days before the Capitol riot, Tarrio was arrested on charges related to possessing high-capacity firearm magazines and property destruction. While a judge ordered him to leave Washington, D.C., he did not participate in the riot. However, Tarrio was ultimately found guilty of seditious conspiracy and other charges for orchestrating the Proud Boys’ participation in the riot. On September 6, 2023, he was sentenced to 22 years in prison.
