Remembering Steve McQueen: The Life and Tragic Passing of ‘The King of Cool’
On November 7th, 2019, the world marked the 39th anniversary of the loss of the iconic American actor, Steve McQueen. Known as ‘The King of Cool,’ McQueen’s life and legacy continue to be celebrated, while his untimely death has left an indelible mark on both the entertainment industry and the hearts of his admirers.
Steve McQueen’s legendary status in the entertainment world was punctuated by his charismatic on-screen presence. Renowned for his roles in iconic films such as The Magnificent Seven, Sand Pebbles, and Wanted: Dead or Alive, he became one of the highest-paid and most adored actors in America during the early 1970s.
Health Battles and Struggles:
In 1978, McQueen’s health took a concerning turn when he developed a persistent cough. Determined to overcome it, he quit smoking and pursued antibiotic treatments. Unfortunately, his condition worsened, leading to shortness of breath and discomfort over time.
McQueen’s health woes culminated in a biopsy on December 22, 1979, revealing a grim diagnosis—pleural mesothelioma. This cancer, caused by exposure to asbestos, usually manifests years after the exposure occurs. Despite medical efforts, there is currently no known cure for mesothelioma, and patients diagnosed with it typically have a life expectancy of up to 12 months.
Unraveling the Cause:
As McQueen’s condition deteriorated, he connected the dots to potential sources of asbestos exposure. His time as a U.S. Marine, his work around insulation materials, and his involvement in racing cars and motorcycles all contributed to his exposure to asbestos. The flame-retardant gear he wore while racing could have further exposed him to the harmful substance.
In the months leading to his death, McQueen traveled to Mexico in pursuit of alternative therapies for his condition. The renowned actor sought treatments from Dr. William Donald Kelley, whose controversial methods included Gerson therapy and unconventional treatments.
A Tragic End:
Despite his efforts to fight mesothelioma, Steve McQueen’s health continued to decline. His return to Mexico for surgery in October 1980 proved fatal. Ignoring the advice of U.S. doctors, he underwent a procedure that ultimately led to his cardiac arrest and passing on November 7, 1980.
